Drew Barrymore is an actress, director, producer and has her own talk show.

She was inspired to have her own show as it would force her to have a more reasonable lifestyle

-
She was legally emancipated from her mom at 14
----
-
MGK aka Colson Baker is a rapper

Started rapping in high school
-
His mother left him and his dad at a very young age and father suffered from extreme mental illnesses
-
Thus, I found solace in music
-
Has expanded his career in a few acting jobs
-
Has had a drug addiction and several other complicated relationships with people in the past
Why did I pick this piece/artifact?
-
It is extremely honest and even though you can learn a lot in terms of composition, there are also many other takeaways
-
Not all celebrities really elaborate on themselves as a person, so this interview felt way deeper and meaningful than the typical celebrity interviews

Composition Takeaways
-
We think of composition in terms of an interview, video, article, and while this piece is a video and interview, it tells us that composition can be as simple as having a conversation with someone
-
Emotions can be just as important as facts and experiences shared
-
Composition can be expressed in other forms that allow one to feel more protected - Like MGK does in his songs
-
Pictures can be deceiving
-
Where you are from is subjective
-
Composition is a great way to use your voice as power - Connection to Ted Talk from last class about voice being political
-
You can use composition in different ways that show growth or different chapters of your life just like moving to different places physically, as drew shares.
-
Not composition but mentor texts and learning opportunities don’t have to come from people older than you. Ex: MGK with his daughter
Class activity – everyone takes 5 minutes to pick any style of composition and use it to relieve any emotional or heavy impact going on right now in your life.

Question for class: What form of composition did you gravitate towards? Poetry? Diary? Simple paragraph? A letter?

My example – my grandfather just had a big surgery done so I decided to write a letter to him letting him know how much he means to me, and I am hoping to read that to him next time I see him.
